ECMO Circuits

Blood is removed from the major vein like the femoral vein. This is done by a pump. The blood is then passed through a membrane oxygenator. Here the blood is oxygenated and placed back into the body.

Venoarterial ECMO :

when the blood is placed back in the artery, it is called veno arterial ECMO. This is typically done for cardiac failure or cardiac arrest.

Venovenous ECMO :

when the blood is placed back in the vein it is called veno venous ECMO. This is done in case of respiratory failure.
